The EMA is a mechanical rip cord puller that is triggered by an electrical pulse from an AGU or electronic AAD. The EMA allows the use of a conventional rip cord instead of a pyrotechnic loop cutter which has traditionally been the only option for mechanical action that is triggered by a computer or AAD.
The Gen-3 EMA has on board batteries and only requires a low current trigger pulse to activate (consistent with an AAD) and the Gen-4 requires a sustained power signal from the host when activated. The Gen-4 EMA was made for a sub-orbital rocket that had on board power, and uses a different spring design that allowed us to increase the pull stroke and maintain a more consistent pull force throughout out the entire stroke.
